Gardens and landscapes are amongst some of my greatest resources for creative inspiration, and so I am thrilled to be working in collaboration with Sugnall Walled Garden, Staffordshire, running six writing workshops in and around the Walled Garden. The first course, exploring gardens, commences on Sunday May 24th; and the Walled Garden at Sugnall is a hidden and inspirational delight being more than a garden where it is possible to enjoy a brief respite from a frantically busy world: it is a place that contains dreams. So, come and join me, and plant some stories of your own!
Creative writing & gardens – How gardens can inspire the written word.
Sunday May 24th , 2015
10.00am – 4.00pm
£45.00 – to include refreshments and lunch.
This day long workshop is for anyone with an interest in gardens, landscapes, prose and poetry. The aim is to explore how important gardens can be to a writer – as an escape, an inspiration, or as subject matter for their work. No prior writing experience is needed.
In this workshop we will look at the lives of several of our most famous poets and novelists and at their relationship with their gardens; writers such as Jane Austen, William Wordsworth, John Clare, and Virginia Woolf.
There will be individual and group writing exercises where you will have a chance to write short pieces of prose or poetry either based on the Walled Garden Sugnall, or on ‘remembered’ gardens. At the end of the day, you will have a deeper understanding of a writer’s relationship with their garden, and have developed ideas about how gardens and nature can feed into your own work.
Do remember to bring a notebook and pen (or laptops if preferred), and any fiction or poetry that features flowers, plants or gardens.
